What Information Does CASIS Collect and How Is That Data Used?

CASIS collects information from our users at several different points on our Website. We collect the following types of personal and non-personal information that are necessary for our legitimate business purposes, and we maintain appropriate safeguards to ensure the security, integrity and privacy of this information. We will not use this information other than as described below.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

CASIS collects contact and related information from you when you contact us or request information or services from CASIS.  The information we collect includes your name, e-mail address, address, and phone number. 

To become a member of CASIS, we will request the following information: name, address, email address, and user name and password.  To the extent you are interested in submitting a proposal to CASIS for funding or to perform research upon the International Space Station, you will be asked to provide CASIS with information related to your research or education project.  If you are submitting a proposal, we will request information including your name, address, email address, user name and password, title, and company name.  By submitting your information to CASIS, requesting membership or providing funding or research submissions, you are consenting to our use of your information as described herein.  If you do not consent, you should not use the Website, Services or submit your requests for funding or research.

CASIS uses the information that we collect for CASIS’ legitimate purposes, including responding to requests for information, processing your requests, reviewing your proposal for funding or to perform research upon the International Space Station, newsletters, competitions, and facilitating your use, and our administration and operation, of our Website and Services and other things we may offer from time to time.  We may also use the information to contact you to discuss your interest in CASIS and to send you information regarding CASIS.

To the extent that you choose to make a donation on the CASIS Website, any credit card, financial and billing information that you provide is used solely to process payment for the donation.  This information is securely processed by third party vendors with whom CASIS has contracts to process payments.  The third party vendors may not use users' personally identifiable information for any secondary purposes. 

Our Website is a general audience website. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under the age of thirteen.   To the extent that we later learn that any personally identifiable information has been inadvertently collected from a child under the age of thirteen, we will promptly delete such information.

The laws applicable to personal information vary from country to country. The information we process and store is kept in accordance with the applicable United States legal requirements, which may not be as comprehensive as the data protection laws found in other countries, such as those in the European Union.

By submitting your information to CASIS, you are consenting to our use of your data as described herein.  If you do not consent, you should not use the Website.

NON-PERSONAL INFORMATION

Certain non-personal information about visits is recorded by the standard operation of the Internet servers on which this Website is hosted.  Non-personally identifiable information ("Aggregate Data") may be used for our business purposes, including but not limited to improvement of the design and content of the Website or to personalize your experience on our Website.  CASIS shall own such Aggregate Data and it may be shared with CASIS’ related entities, advertisers, partners and/or other third party vendors.

Cookies

CASIS uses cookies on this Website and in the provision of our services.  Cookies are files that Web browsers place on a computer's hard drive and are used to tell us whether users and visitors have previously visited our website.  They are used to make your experience easy and meaningful and to enable certain technical operations. Usage of a cookie is not linked to any personally identifiable information while on our Website.

When you visit our Website, open our e-mail or newsletter, we may send you a cookie. Cookies also allow us to track overall site usage and determine areas users prefer, enabling us to make your visit to our Website easier by recognizing you when you return and helping to provide you with a customized experience.

Log Files

Like many standard website servers, our web servers use log files.  Log files include but are not limited to internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp and number of clicks.  We may also keep track of how you got to our Website and any links you click on to leave our site. Log files are used to analyze trends, administer the site, track aggregated users' movement and gather broad demographic information.

Is Information Shared With Third Parties?

CASIS does not sell, share, or distribute any personal information to any third parties, other than as outlined herein.  We may, however, employ other companies and individuals to perform functions on our behalf.  Examples include processing credit card payments, sending postal mail and email, analyzing data, and providing customer service.  To perform these functions, these companies and individuals may have access to information needed to perform their functions, but may not use it for other purposes. 

If you submit a request for funding or request to perform research on the International Space Station, your request and contact information will be shared with NASA and may be shared with a party having a legal relationship with CASIS. With your permission, your contact information may be shared with companies who may be interested in funding such projects and research or with third parties that provide products or services for the International Space Station.  If you provide products or services for the International Space Station, your contact information may be shared with those interested in obtaining those products or services.

As we continue to develop our business, we might sell or buy assets. In such transactions, customer information may be transferred to: (i) a parent or subsidiary; (ii) an acquirer of assets; or (iii) a successor by merger.

We may also release information when we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law; enforce CASIS’ TOU or other agreements; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of CASIS, our users, or others.  This includes, but it is not limited to exchanging information with other companies and organizations for fraud protection.

International Transfer/Processing of Information

Your information may be transferred to and maintained on computers and servers located outside of your state, province, country, or other governmental jurisdiction where the privacy laws may not be as protective as those in your jurisdiction.  If you are located outside the United States and choose to provide information to us, you acknowledge that CASIS processes your Personal Information in the United States.  Your consent to this Privacy Policy and your submission of such information represents your agreement to that transfer.  You can opt out of providing this personal information by not entering it when asked or by not using CASIS Website or Services.

How Can I Access and Update My Information?

Users who have provided contact information may e-mail CASIS at memberrecords@iss-casis.org to update their contact or other information.

Security

CASIS has reasonable security measures in place to help protect against the loss, misuse, and alteration of the data and files under our control.  Personal information we collect is stored in password-controlled servers, and we protect this information from loss or misuse, and from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. While we take reasonable efforts to guard personal information we knowingly collect directly from you, no security system is impenetrable and therefore, CASIS does not make any guarantees regarding your personal information.  It is important for you to protect against unauthorized access to your password and to your computer.  Be sure to logout and close your browser when finished using a shared computer.

Communications from CASIS

Users who have provided contact information may occasionally receive e-mail updates, newsletters or information from CASIS.  In order to respect our users’ privacy, we present the option to decline these types of communications.  Please see the Choice/Opt-out section below.

Choice/Opt-Out

Users are given the opportunity to opt-out of having their information used for purposes not directly related to our existing business relationship. Users who no longer wish to receive e-mail solicitations, newsletters or other information from CASIS may opt-out of receiving these communications by clicking on the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the e-mail communication. Users can also opt-out by e-mailing us at memberrecords@iss-casis.org using "unsubscribe" in the subject line.

Our Website may contain links to other sites.  Please be aware that CASIS is not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites or the policies, content, and practices of other web sites. California Privacy Rights

California Civil Code Section 1798.83 permits our visitors who are California residents to request certain information regarding our disclosure of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes. As referenced in this Privacy Policy, CASIS does not disclose personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes.
